Meet Petey

Petey has been part of the Good Karma Initiative since January 2026, when he came to us as an owner surrender. 

At the time, a lack of consistent structure and boundaries created a dog who struggled with self-control and regulation. Petey had learned to push boundaries, and when his excitement took over, he didn't always know what to do with himself.

Underneath all of that energy, was an incredibly driven, confident little dog who genuinely loves to work, play, and be with his people.

And that is the Petey we've gotten to know.

Petey is approximately 30 lbs, neutered, and up-to-date vaccinations. He is approximately 1 year and 3 months old. 

His previous family described him as an Aussie Mountain Doodle—a mix of Australian Shepherd, Bernese Mountain Dog, and Poodle—although Petey looks a whole lot like a Poodle!

Petey is confident, social, energetic, and incredibly driven. If you have a toy or a treat, you probably have his attention.

He loves being outside, playing in water, socializing, toys, food, affection, and just about anything that gives him an opportunity to engage his brain and body. He's also a vocal player, so don't be surprised if Petey has plenty to say while he's having fun.

Ultimately, this little guy wants two things: something fun to do and someone to love on him.

Petey has jumped through a lot of hoops since entering our program, and we're incredibly happy with the progress he's made.

He's learned that structure and boundaries aren't bad things—they actually help him regulate all of that enthusiasm.

Petey has been conditioned to an e-collar, and we're continuing to build his off-leash reliability. We're also working heavily on his ability to remain neutral and ignore other dogs while he's on leash. Rather than feeling like he needs to engage with everything around him.

Petey is eager to please and extremely willing to learn. With the right handler, there isn't much we don't think this little dog would be willing to try.

His training will continue for as long as he remains in our care.

We believe adopters deserve to know the whole dog—not just the easy parts.

When Petey gets overstimulated, one of his default behaviors is jumping. That's a boundary we consistently maintain because excitement can also make Petey mouthy. We don't want jumping and over-arousal escalating into an accidental nip or bite. His future family will need to be comfortable maintaining those expectations rather than allowing old habits to creep back in.

Petey is also a confident, dominant player with other dogs. He enjoys socializing, but his play style and personality need to be considered when introducing him to potential canine housemates.

He can coexist with cats, but Petey does have prey drive and can become hyper fixated on them. Any home with cats would need to understand that management and continued training may be necessary.
